Introducing Surface Duo 2

Motion Graphics Designer and CG Supervisor

In 2021, I created the UI animations for the highly anticipated Surface Duo 2 launch video. My role involved the animation of all the UI on the Duo device across two screens, which presented a unique and challenging opportunity to showcase my skills in motion graphics and UI design.

Working closely with cross-functional teams at Microsoft, I ensured that the project was delivered on time and to the highest standards. Collaborating with third-party groups such as Google, TikTok, Spotify, and Kindle, I brought together various creative perspectives to achieve a cohesive and visually stunning final product.

In addition to animation, I also took on the role of CG supervision on location during multiple shoots, overseeing the on-set integration of animation and live-action footage. I was also responsible for designing UI scenes, which allowed us to capture practical footage in-camera, resulting in a more natural and organic look for the final video.

I am proud to have provided technical support on this project, serving as AC, lighting, and gaffing during pick-up shoots. My versatility and ability to work effectively in multiple roles was critical factor in the successful completion of the project, and I was honored to have the opportunity to contribute to such a high-profile and innovative product launch.

PRODUCTION BREAKDOWN

The following videos showcase a selection of scenes from this production, where I was responsible for incorporating UI animation into live-action footage. All of these scenes were filmed with tracking screens, and I was tasked with tracking the UI and matching it with the talent's interaction with the device. After reviewing the second video, it was determined that a reshoot was necessary to improve the flow of the scene. Throughout the project, I made required tweaks to the UI to ensure a seamless and final product. Our compositing team then polished the last video before being integrated into the edit.
