UI Production Director
As the UI Production Director for the Recall app launch, I led the visualization efforts to demonstrate how users will utilize this new Microsoft app. My responsibilities included:
- Large-Scale Visualization: Developed visuals specifically designed for a massive 50-foot screen to ensure clarity and impact during the live public introduction.
- Project Management: Managed the project from start to finish, coordinating numerous production meetings over several months and developing final visuals within a tight two-week timeline.
- Enhanced Scenarios: Built on previous Recall experiences from Surface Pro, Surface Laptop, and Copilot+ PC sizzle videos, pushing these scenarios further for the live stage production.
Our collaborative efforts culminated in a dynamic and engaging video showcased during Yusuf's live presentation. This project highlighted Recall's full potential and demonstrated our commitment to delivering cutting-edge visualizations for major presentations.
Microsoft
One of the unique challenges of the Recall app launch was creating visuals that would be displayed on a massive 50-foot screen. To address this, we spent a considerable amount of time at the Microsoft production studios, figuring out the best dimensions for video clips, UI elements, device renders, and gradients to ensure they looked perfect on such a large display.
Initial Exploration:
- Reference Video: Filmed a reference video on my cellphone to capture our progress and insights, highlighting the meticulous planning and experimentation required to achieve the best visual outcome for the stage presentation.
Concept Development:
- Initial Concept: The initial concept involved having the talent walk out on stage with their timeline building out behind them, aiming to create a dynamic and engaging introduction to Recall.
- Text Prompt and UI Adjustments: Focused on showing a text prompt being typed out, transitioning into the Recall UI. Adjusted the UI to facilitate the 50-foot screen, including a person reference for sizing purposes.
- Script Integration: Used a portion of the script to shape the narrative and visual style, providing a clear direction for the final production.
Pivot and Adaptation:
- Board-o-matic: Created a quick board-o-matic to visualize a new direction after a script change. This was essential in adapting quickly and effectively to new requirements.
Pivot and Adaptation:
- Quick Animatic: Developed a rough cut to establish the pacing and flow of the visuals.
- Animation Refinement: Further refined the animation using a temporary audio track to ensure a smoother flow.
Final Adjustments:
- Temporary Recording from Yusuf: Incorporated Yusuf's recording to finalize pacing. This version was crucial for review, leading to feedback on UI size adjustments and overall polish.
- Pre-Event Polished Edit: Completed a polished version before the event, incorporating all feedback and adjustments to ensure readiness for the final presentation.
Event Execution:
I recorded two additional videos in the event space. The video on the left was recorded on the Friday before the event, and the video on the right was recorded during the event, which was an incredible experience to attend.
Event Demo
It was my opportunity to see how our animation would appear on the big screen and on camera. After reviewing this with the events team, I realized that I needed to minimize the video movement because it appeared too abrupt. Additionally, the team requested that we divide the video into two parts to facilitate easier transitions from an intro clip to an outro clip. These adjustments ensured a seamless presentation.
Event Day
Witnessed our work displayed on the big screen. Despite some timing mismatches due to lack of rehearsal, the video looked and sounded fantastic. This experience provided valuable insights for future presentations.
These iterative edits and strategic decisions were essential in fine-tuning the visual and audio elements, aligning them perfectly for the final stage presentation. The Recall app launch was an incredible opportunity to demonstrate the app's capabilities on a grand scale, and it set a new standard for our stage animations.
